Nevada is all flat, sandy desert. Or so I thought until I visited the state for the first time in October 2016. To be sure, there is plenty of flat, sandy terrain in Nevada, but there is also stunningly beautiful forest and mountains with a diverse ecosystem.
Medicine Bow National Forest is an incredible scenic area. This forest sits in southern Wyoming near the Colorado border. We first traveled through Medicine Bow on our way south from Gillette as we were migrating back to Arizona for winter.
I passed by Winslow, Arizona several times – late at night – before finally timing it right in July 2016. As I made my way from Flagstaff, Arizona to Gillette, Wyoming, I stopped in Winslow for a selfie on a corner. Cliche, I know, but I had to do it!
The southwest desert around Ehrenberg and Quartzsite has been my winter home base over the past few years. These are a few of the photos that I took there in December 2016.
Wupatki National Monument is home to a number of ancient Pueblo ruins. Located north of Flagstaff on Highway 89, this site offers a mind-blowing experience for lovers of history and ancient civilizations.
Mesa Verde National Park provides a rare opportunity to walk, quite literally, along the footpaths of the ancients. The park preserves thousands of archaeological sites, including hundreds of cliff dwellings. We visited this southwest Colorado park during summer 2016 and were absolutely mesmerized.
Sedona, Arizona is Red Rock Country. I first visited this area in May 2016 and was immediately struck by its enchanted views.
Grand Canyon National Park is yet another site that defies adequate description. Words just cannot convey the majestic grandeur of the Grand Canyon.
Arches National Park is an experience that defies description. The park sights are simply beyond words. The best description that I could conjure after my autumn 2015 visit is that it was like visiting another planet. I know that sounds cliche, but it is true.
The Black Hills of South Dakota are impressively beautiful. One hidden gem that is easy to miss is Roughlock Falls in Spearfish Canyon.
