Full moon at sunrise in the desert
Full moon at sunrise in Ehrenberg, Arizona

In the desert, many people bookend their days by watching the sun rise and set. Partly this is due to being more connected to nature, but it is also because the sunrises and sunsets in the desert tend to be spectacular events.

On a good day, the event may last for more than half an hour. As the sun arcs across the horizon, before finally appearing or disappearing for the day, the colors change a spectacular light show. It really is something to see and experience. It is not uncommon for the sunset to span 360 degrees, with incredible colors lighting the sky in a complete circle.

Last night, I stood outside just after dark to watch a full moon rise over the Dome Rock Mountains. That site was incredible, and it was so nice to be able to enjoy it in warm weather. This morning, as I stepped out my door at sunrise, I was greeted with the sight of the same moon approaching the western horizon in a colorful sky. Sunrise this morning could be enjoyed by looking east or west, but looking west also provided a view of the moon.

A lot of people do not like the desert, but it has a beauty all its own. It does, however, take time and patience to be able to appreciate its beauty. The sunrises and sunsets, which words and photos fail to capture, are one incredible part of the beauty of the desert.
